VAAGDHARA

VAAGDHARA empowers tribal communities in western India through indigenous seed conservation, climate-resilient farmingand Gandhian self-governance principles.

Overview

VAAGDHARA (Voluntary Association of Agricultural General Development Health and Reconstruction Alliance) is a non-profit organisation founded in 1986 that works with tribal communities in western India across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The name derives from "Vagad", the tribal region of Rajasthan bordering Gujarat, and "Dhara" meaning stream. Rooted in the Gandhian philosophy of Swaraj (self-reliance), VAAGDHARA has impacted over 2,00,000 tribal families across 1,000+ villages, focusing on climate-resilient livelihoods, indigenous seed sovereignty and community-led governance.

Approach

VAAGDHARA follows a rights-based, bottom-up approach where tribal communities are treated as change-makers rather than beneficiaries. The organisation doesn't impose solutions but helps communities identify their own challenges and overcome them by integrating indigenous knowledge with appropriate modern practices. Central to their philosophy is "Swaraj" or self-reliance across seeds, food, water, soil and governance. VAAGDHARA holds Special Consultative Status with UN-ECOSOC, allowing them to amplify indigenous community concerns on global platforms.

Key Focus Areas

True Farming (Saccha Kheti)

VAAGDHARA promotes a circular economic approach to agriculture centred on rainfed farming, community-owned seed management and revival of indigenous practices. Their flagship initiative is "Beej Swaraj" (Seed Sovereignty) – tribal women-led efforts to preserve and exchange traditional seed varieties adapted to local climate conditions. Through annual Beej Utsav (Seed Festivals), they have documented and preserved 80+ indigenous seed varieties including Kali Kamod rice, Doodh Mogar maize and Pathariya rice. Their work with the FAO's Mountain Partnership Products Initiative has increased indigenous crop production by 50-70% while improving farmer incomes.

True Governance (Saccha Shasan)

VAAGDHARA empowers indigenous self-governance institutions through a bottom-up approach to policy. They engage tribal communities in developing policies that protect indigenous knowledge and traditional practices, while strengthening women-led community groups (Saksham Samooh) for gender equality. Their 500 km Swaraj Sandesh-Samwad Padyatra from Banswara to Jaipur in 2024 brought tribal voices directly to state policymakers.

True Childhood (Saccha Bachpan)

The organisation works to ensure children's rights through community-based institutions like Bal Panchayat (Children's Council) and village child rights committees. This includes ensuring access to education, healthcare, nutrition, and platforms for children to participate in community decisions.

Recognition & Impact

VAAGDHARA's work spans 3 states, 6 districts, 350+ gram panchayats and 1,000+ villages, reaching over 200,000 tribal families. In 2023, the organisation received an unrestricted grant from MacKenzie Scott's Yield Giving, a significant recognition of their community-led approach. They were also awarded the Vagad Ratna Award in 2022 for their contribution to environmental conservation through traditional farming methods. VAAGDHARA is a grantee of Rainmatter Foundation, which supports their work on climate-resilient livelihoods and indigenous knowledge systems.
