Rainmatter Foundation
Founded in 2019, they are a non-profit organisation in India that supports other organisations and projects working on climate action, a healthier environment, and related livelihoods.
They aim to be a common platform for different stakeholders (CSOs, NGOs, startups, policy makers, etc.) who are working in the climate space. Their goal is to help these groups collaborate on meaningful and impactful work around serious climate and environmental issues in areas such as forests, water, soil, farms, food systems, ecology, energy, and transport.
They focus on supporting and growing ideas that help protect and bring back natural ecosystems. They believe this work needs both hands-on work at the grassroots level and support for bigger efforts that help the public understand these problems better. This can lead to more people joining in, beyond just a few who are giving through philanthropy.
They do not see this work as charity, but as an investment in everyone’s future and wellbeing
To help build and grow this ecosystem, they have committed $200 million in funding and grants to individuals and organisations working in these fields:
Ecology: Water, air, soil, and biodiversity — the basic needs that people assume are free, but only notice when they start to disappear.
Human services: Education, healthcare, legal access, law and justice, shared spaces, communication, local access, and quality of life. Real climate action must include these human needs.
Economy: Entrepreneurship, livelihoods, value addition, local skills, production, and consumption. The aim is to reduce outside dependency and prevent economic loss from local areas. Since environmental damage is closely tied to the economy, it needs to be handled with care.
Pride and identity: Local culture, arts, crafts, Geographical Indications (GI), shared natural and cultural heritage, local food, and tourism. Protecting the environment should be linked to things that give people pride and a sense of identity.
